Handmade Leather goods Vs. Commercial

What’s out there?

I’m fairly certain after recently starting my leather business that there are still a lot of people who are unaware of the many businesses/companies making handmade leather goods.

When I started with wallets, I would simply ask around the firehouse, my own home, Friends and family, etc. to see what kind of wallet they had (yeah, it’s a bit odd I will admit). Surprisingly, yet not surprising at all, I found that most people had your generic wallet that was made in bulk that they got for around 15-20 bucks.

Is there anything wrong with that? Of course not! However I strongly feel that if people were aware of the outstanding craftsmanship that existed in the leather field would persuade a lot people to obtain something for themselves.

The pricing

Don’t get me wrong, there are certain products out there that have a hefty price tag for a seemingly simple item. So, what gives?

Simply put, you’re paying for the persons time and skill. When you order a handmade leather item, that person is involved throughout every step of the process from start to finish. Even a small business with a team, everyone is very much a part of the process in some way. It becomes personal.

Each piece has a bit of character you can’t get from a commercial grade item. Small imperfections, colors, etc. are all part of what add to a handmade products character, making each piece one of a kind.

Again, buying a mass produced item at a lower cost isn’t a bad thing. I would venture to say buying from a small business that hand makes their products and supports their craftsmanship is definitely worth a higher price tag.

If you haven’t considered it, pick yourself up a handmade leather good!
